Prevention Is Better Than A Cure
Check-ups and cleans are important preventative measures in maintaining optimal oral health.
What happens during my check-up and clean?
During your check-up and clean appointment, your dentist will be able to examine and establish any signs of underlying dental concerns that need addressing. Your dentist will also take the time to perform a professional scale and clean to ensure any plaque, hard-to-reach debris and bacteria are removed and you walk out of our practice feeling assured and satisfied with your dental visit.
What happens if I don’t visit my dentist regularly?
When we brush our teeth daily and floss regularly, there may still be a build-up of plaque or bacteria in hard-to-reach areas or spots that are hard to see. If you continuously miss these areas and leave the bacteria to continue building, you may be inviting unwanted dental concerns later down the line.
Some of these concerns may include gum disease, severe rotten teeth, tooth decay, cavities, or severe plaque build-up that may harden into tartar. Tartar can only be cleaned and removed professionally by your dentist.
If you don’t visit your dentist regularly, you may experience a build-up of plaque, tartar and bacteria which can cause dental decay, gum disease and bad breath. By visiting your dentist every 6 months for a preventive check-up and clean, you can avoid these problems and maintain optimal oral health.

Check-Up & Clean FAQs
While many people don’t really like to visit the dentist or try to put it off for as long as possible, your check-up and cleans are actually far more beneficial than you may realise.
During your appointment, you’ll have any signs of cavities or tooth decay established and addressed, establish any underlying signs of gum disease as well as other issues related to your general health, and maintain the appearance of your smile all at an affordable cost.
In short, yes. It is crucial that all patients, no matter how good their at-home oral health routine is, still visit the dentist at least one to two times a year as recommended by the Australian Dental Association (ADA).
While your smile may appear spotless, white and clean as anything, there are always underlying bacteria and plaque in hard-to-reach areas that a toothbrush and flossing may not pick up. Over time, this plaque will develop and harden into what’s known as tartar. This is something that can only be removed professionally during your check-up and clean.
Dental benefits or coverage would be dependent on who your health provider is and what their benefits include, as well as your eligibility for Medicare or State Government coverage.
