Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are a commonly performed dental service often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as orthodontic treatment. The primary purpose of tooth extraction is to remove a tooth that is damaged or has become infected beyond the point of saving.
It’s important to our team to ensure a tooth extraction is the ‘last resort’ treatment and we will do everything in our power to first save the tooth before deciding on tooth extraction as the most suitable solution for you.
Why would I need a tooth extraction?
There are many reasons why you may need a tooth extraction. Common reasons patients require a tooth extraction include:
- Severe decay that has progressed to the point where the tooth can no longer be repaired with other restorative treatments such as root canal therapy.
- A broken or cracked tooth that is causing pain or other oral health concerns
- A wisdom tooth that is impacted and causing pain or other oral health concerns
- Periodontal disease that has caused significant bone loss around the teeth
If you are experiencing any of these issues, your dentist will recommend tooth extraction as the best course of treatment.
How are tooth extractions performed?
Tooth extractions are typically a safe and relatively easy procedure, and can be performed in the dentist’s office under local anaesthesia. The dentist will first administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. Then, they will use a special tool to loosen and remove the tooth. In most cases, the whole process takes only a few minutes.

Tooth Extraction FAQs
You should avoid hard and crunchy foods for the first few days after your tooth extraction. This is because they can irritate your gum tissue. Soft and liquid foods are the best option as they will be gentle on your gums. Some good examples include soup, yoghurt and light smoothies.
Pro tip: If you are having trouble eating soft foods, you can use a blender to make them into a smooth consistency.
The amount of time that pain lasts after tooth extraction can vary depending on the individual. For most people, however, the pain will start to dissipate within a few days. However, for some people, the pain may last for up to two weeks.
If you are experiencing prolonged or severe pain after a tooth extraction, be sure to contact your dentist.
You can generally smoke again after a tooth extraction once the healing process is complete. This typically takes around two weeks.
